Henry Graves and James Packard were two of the richest and most competitive men in the world in the 1920s and 1930's. Graves made millions in banking and railroads while Packard was crafting some of the most beautiful automobiles ever built. But in their genteel world of high society, they were at war. Their favorite competition...watch collecting. In 1927, Packard commissioned the world's most complicated watch but not to be outdone, Henry Graves surpassed his rival in 1933 with a single masterpiece. It took over 3 years to engineer this truly one of a kind timepiece; only one watch was ever built. It was held in the Museum of Time for years until it was recently auctioned off for the record price of over £11 million dollars at Sotheby's.What makes rare watches rare? Business Week states it best , "It's the complications that can have the biggest impact on price."(Business Week July 2003) The hands of the four interior complications on our Graves watch display the month, day, date, and a 24 hour clock that graphically depicts the sun and the moon. The engine for this timepiece is powered by the movement of the body as the automatic rotor winds the mainspring. So it never needs batteries and never needs to be manually wound. The precision crafted gears are "lubricated" by 27 rubies that give the hands a sweeping movement. And the watch is tough enough to stay water resistant to 5 atmospheres. Not only have we emulated a stunning watch of the 1930s but just as surprising, we've been able to replicate the prices of the 1930s.The fine 27 jewel automatics that are on the market today are usually priced well over £2000 dollars but you can enter the rarified world of fine watch collecting for under £200. You can now wear a millionaire's watch but still keep your millions in your vest pocket. Keep your watch investment looking new with one of our Stauer Bands. These replacement bands are the perfect way to maintain, or repair your Stauer watch to keep it in peak condition.
